Let’s understand the stages of IVF treatment - Dr.Shweta Mittal Gupta

What Is IVF?

IVF is a term common people know well. It is a popular assisted reproductive technique. In this, eggs are extracted from the woman’s body and sperm is extracted from the male’s body. Both of these are fused under lab conditions. When this process is successful, the embryo is formed. The fetus is kept under observation for 3-4 days. The best fetus is identified and placed in the woman’s uterus. The woman conceives after successful egg implantation.

What are the stages of IVF treatment?

First stage:

Formation of eggs: Naturally a single egg is formed in a woman’s ovary during a month; But with the help of IVF technology, the woman is given such medicines that more than one egg starts built in her ovaries. More eggs are made so that a greater number of healthy embryos can be made.

Second Stage:

Laying out the eggs: To remove the eggs from the woman’s ovaries, the woman is made unconscious for 15 minutes. After this, a thin syringe (needle) is inserted through the vagina with the help of ultrasound imaging and the healthy eggs are removed from it.

Third step :

Fertilization of eggs: Now confirmed sperm are isolated from the semen of the male in the lab and fertilization is done with the eggs of the female. In this process, a single sperm is used to achieve fertilization through direct injection of sperm into the egg. After the fertilization process is complete, the developed embryo is placed in an incubator.

Fourth stage:

Embryo development: The development of embryos kept in incubators takes place under the supervision of embryo scientists. After 2 to 3 days, this fertilized egg is converted into a 6 to 8 cell embryo. Of these developed embryos, 2 or 3 embryos of good quality are selected for transplantation.

Stage five:

Embryo Transplant: Embryologists select 1 or more healthy embryos from the developed embryo or blastocyst and take them to the embryo transfer catheter. Doctors carefully implant these embryos into the woman’s uterus under the monitoring of ultrasound imaging through a thin tube in the woman’s uterus. It is necessary to state here that there is no pain in this process nor any operation is done. Now after implantation, the fetus develops in the same way as in natural pregnancies.
